What We Missed: Monday July 22nd

The idea of Tom Hanks playing American television icon Fred Rogers sounds like a perfect match on paper, and it truly is a dream come true in the first trailer for Sony’s fall awards hopeful “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood.” The biographical drama is the latest from Marielle Heller, the indie wunderkind behind “The Diary of a Teenage Girl” and “Can You Ever Forgive Me?”

For Mariano Rivera, it was the culmination of a storied career, dreams of being the next Pele long since forgotten. For Brandy Halladay, the Baseball Hall of Fame induction ceremony was a tearful moment to reflect on the accomplishments of her late husband, and she handled a difficult task admirably.

Rivera, the career saves leader and the first player unanimously voted into the Hall by the Baseball Writers' Association of America, was greeted by chants of his name from the adoring crowd as he stepped to the podium in a fitting close to Sunday's ceremony. He spoke in both English and, at the end, in Spanish, rarely looking down at the speech he had prepared.

That’s gotta hurt!

Yankees first baseman Luke Voit had a nasty surprise while facing off against the Colorado Rockies on Saturday, getting hit by a 91 miles per hour fastball in the fourth inning of the game.

Just one strike away from being retired for the at-bat, Rockies’ Chad Bettis threw a pitch which completely missed the strike zone, making contact with Voit and clipping the bottom of his chin.

After a brief conversation to determine whether he felt okay to stay in the game, Voit opted to keep playing, and advanced to first. Remaining in the game for the rest of the inning, he was even able to score a run for his team, who went on to win 11-5.

Shaquille O’Neal is a retiree with plenty of money and free time who doesn’t really play golf, so instead he continues exploring his long-held passion for music. Shaq, or, as he’s known now, DJ Diesel, performed a full one-hour set this weekend at the Tomorrowland Music Festival in Belgium. But, as a true music enthusiast, he was not content to spending the rest of the festival lounging in the backstage VIP area. No, Shaq is a man who lives his life to the absolute fullest. He must dance, mosh, andstand in the very front row in what must’ve sent everyone standing behind him on the emotional roller coaster of a lifetime. Please enjoy the below videos of the Diesel himself rocking out to Modestep’s set, as well as the YouTube video of his own set, for it is moments like these that should remind you: Joy, it exists.
