Finding someone to enjoy a relationship with feels amazing…until it doesn’t. Couples grow apart or may not feel like they’re ready to commit…but sometimes it’s not so cut and dry. Even if you decide that being single is more appealing, the actually breaking up can be scary. Only you know if you’d be happier being single, but psychologist Marni Amsellem says these are some common signs you would.
- You can't stop checking your partner's texts and emails. Couples have to deal with trust issues, like lying and cheating, but if your partner isn’t open and honest, or is gaslighting you to make you feel like you have the problem, or you’re resorting to secretly checking up on them, that’s a big red flag.
- You put all of your time and energy into your career. If you have different work-life balance preferences and one or both of you isn’t willing to compromise, it could mean you’d be happier in the long run being single.
- You don’t want to live in the same place.Couples who talk about the future and decide they want to live different places can make compromises for each other, but if you’re compromising more than you want, that’s not a good sign.
- You want to go on vacations and date nights, but your partner would rather stay home and save money.People in relationships may have different views on money and how to use it, but if they can’t work through spending and saving habits and come to an agreement, it may be time to move on.
- You daydream about cheating — a lot.Relationship therapist Tammy Nelson says, “Most people who are at the point of wanting to cheat are probably going to do it.” But just continuing to think about being unfaithful could be a sign that breaking up would be best.
