Tips on Sticking With Your New Year's Resolution

After the year we’ve had it’s nice to finally be able to say 2021 is just around the corner. And that means it's almost time for New Year’s resolutions again. According to a 2019 report, 60% of Americans make them, but only 8% stick to them. So how do we become one of the 8%? Experts say the key is starting slow and offer these tips to “baby step” your way so your resolutions don’t come as such a shock on January 1st.

  • Resolution: Exercise more - Baby step: Decide when you want to work out each day. Starting a new fitness routine is one of the most popular New Year’s resolutions, but it can be intimidating when you’re a newbie. Peloton instructor Aditi Shah’s biggest tip to success is making exercise a part of your weekly calendar. So find the workout you want to try, then schedule the commitment a few times a week.
  • Resolution: Eat more vegetables - Baby step: Add them to one meal or snack a day. Functional nutrition coach Andrea Gharritt advises starting with simple swaps, like adding greens to smoothies, doubling the veggies in a recipe and keeping prepped produce on-hand for quick snacking.
  • Resolution: Prioritize positivity - Baby step: Dance it out when you feel down. Just one minute of dancing can lower stress, according to life coach Doug Marshall, and that can help encourage a sunny outlook and boost your mood.
  • Resolution: Grow your savings - Baby step: Try to spend 10% less in one category. Personal finance expert Jen Smith says the key to financial success is going back to basics. That means making a budget, looking at your spending and finding one area where you can cut down 10%.
  • Resolution: Shop more sustainably- Baby step: Take more time to think before you buy. Instead of buying in the moment, Bobby Barron, owner of sustainable and ethical clothing store Hazel & Rose advises being patient. Go home, consider if the item really belongs in your home or closet, then if you really want or need it, go back and get it.
  • Resolution: Stick to a skincare routine - Baby Step: Go back to the basics. No need to overcomplicate things with a 10-step routine. Celebrity esthetician Renee Rouleau’s advice is to start with four products: a cleanser, a serum and two moisturizers, one with an SPF for daytime and a non-SPF one for night.
