Despite sparking controversy so major that theaters beefed up their security,Todd Phillips’ “Joker” starring Joaquin Phoenix laughed its way to a record-breaking box office debut. The supervillain flick raked in a whopping $93-million over the weekend, beating 2018’s “Venom’s” record as the biggest October opening ever by more than $10-million.
“Joker” is doing just as well overseas, adding up to a worldwide total of $234-million for its debut weekend. Of course, its success is due at least in part to all the attention it got – negative or not – leading up to the opening. It’s easily earned the top spot at the box office, more than $80-million ahead of the movie in second place, “Abominable.”
In third is “Downton Abbey,” which made $8-million for its third weekend in theaters. Almost every other flick in the top 10 saw more than a 50-percent drop in earnings, but “Good Boys” is still going strong in the 10th spot after eight weeks… with just $900K, that is.
Here’s this weekend’s Top 10 movies:
- “Joker” – $93.5-million
