DDG:Woman Who Put College On Hold To Raise A Family Finally Graduates At 79

This weekend, 79-year-old Patricia Sias Ellis will graduate from Clayton State University with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, a goal she began pursuing nearly 60 years ago. After high school, Ellis chose to work and raise a family instead of attending college. She supported her husband and son as they completed their degrees at Morehouse College, and her son later encouraged her to go back to school.

About eight years ago, Ellis began classes at Atlanta Metropolitan State College and eventually transferred to Clayton State University, taking one or two courses at a time. She overcame a serious health scare last year when doctors removed a 10-pound tumor from her kidney but after her surgery she went right back to her studies. Despite the challenges, she stayed focused and steadily progressed toward her degree.

Faculty and students at Clayton State describe Ellis as an inspiring and joyful presence on campus. University President Dr. Georj Lewis says she’s well known and will likely receive a standing ovation at graduation. Ellis shares that the college experience has been fulfilling and joyful. After graduation, she wants to help others navigate the justice system, and she’s considering continuing her education to earn a master’s degree.
