DDG: PA Girl Donates $27K From County Fair 4-H Pig Sale To Build New Barn

Last Friday at the Fayette County Fair livestock auction in Pennsylvania, nine-year-old Harper Diamond made a surprise announcement that she would donate all proceeds from the sale of her 270-pound pig to help build a new barn. The crowd responded to her kind gesture by quickly bidding up the auction to $42.50 per pound, more than 10 times the normal price.

The generosity didn’t stop with the auction win though. Inspired by Harper’s donation, others in the audience started pledging additional dollars per pound. By the end of the night, Harper had helped raise $27-thousand, all of which will go toward building a much-needed new pig barn at the Fayette County Fairgrounds.

The current pig barn, which has stood for 50 years, is scheduled for demolition this week. The Fayette County Fair Association plans to take on the rebuilding project, supported in part by Harper’s generous contribution. Her family says they’re grateful for the overwhelming support and they’re proud of the impact that she’s making in the community.
