Jasmine Mix of Terre Haute, Indiana, was visiting her parents’ home earlier this month when she unexpectedly went into labor. She was 36 weeks pregnant and had been feeling some contractions since the previous evening, but things escalated quickly after her water broke. By the time she and her husband got into the car, she felt the urge to push, and her parents frantically called out to their neighbor, firefighter and paramedic Nathan Huyck.
He’s been with the Terre Haute Fire Department for three years and rushed over to help. Right there on the front lawn, with family and neighbors gathered around, Huyck helped deliver the baby girl, Adaline Jaymes Mix, clearing her airway and getting her to breathe and cry before paramedics even arrived.
Paramedics soon arrived, checked over both mother and baby, and took them to the hospital for follow-up care. Jasmine later said the experience started out scary but turned into “a beautiful blessing.” For Huyck, it was the first childbirth he’d ever handled, but he credits his department’s training for preparing him to know exactly what to do.
