Washing your hands in cold water is just as effective as hot water in killing germs, according to a new study published in the Journal of Food Protection. "People need to feel comfortable when they are washing their hands but as far as effectiveness, this study shows us that the temperature of the water used didn't matter," Donald Schaffner, a professor and extension specialist in food science at Rutgers, said in a press release.
The study findings could have an impact on the restaurant and food industry, since current FDA regulations require plumbing systems at restaurants and food establishments to deliver water at 100 degrees for hand washing.
