With thousands of people stranded or displaced by Hurricane Harvey, one furniture store owner in Houston decided to turn his space into makeshift shelters for anyone in need. Gallery Furniture posted on Facebook that they were opening their doors to those affected by the storm and its aftermath.
The furniture chain explained that the two stores had food, beds, and clean restrooms for folks to use, and they even welcomed pets, as long as they were in a kennel and stayed with their owners. Gallery Furniture owner Jim “Mattress Mack” McIngvale said the stores could accommodate a few hundred folks each and both of them reached capacity when word of the offer got out.
“We hope to give them some comfort in this incredibly difficult time,” McIngvale said.
