Southwest Flies Stranded Passengers Free of Charge

Southwest Airlines at Hobby AIrport in Houston

As the flooding from Hurricane  Harvey continued, hundreds of travelers were stranded at Houston Hobby  Airport with no options. The storm grounded all flights, but about 500  lucky passengers made it out Sunday night on five emergency rescue  flights Southwest Airlines made to Dallas.

The airline boarded stranded folks on  five of their stranded Boeing 737s and took off before sunset, since  the airport had no operational runway lights for takeoff. There are  still 10 Southwest planes on the ground at Houston Hobby, but the  airport is expected to remain closed to all non-emergency flights until  at least August 30, according to the FAA.
