With all the devastation caused by Hurricane Harvey, we all want to help those affected by this incredible disaster, but some of us aren’t sure the best way to do that. Sadly, with tragedy, come tricksters – if you need a hand figuring out what’s real and what isn’t, try CharityNavigator.org or CharityWatch.org.
In the meantime, if you want to get involved and you're not local, here's a bonafide list of organizations on the ground in affected areas - and instructions on how you can help:
- Dover Downs Hotel and Casino & Dover International Speedway are collecting: non-perishable food, cleaning items, clothing, toiletries and pet supplies today and tomorrow at the speedway ticket office. Dover Downs will donate linens, towels, water and more to the cause.
- September 8th it's "Hats for Houston" and "Trousers for Texas" at all Caesar Rodney Schools. Students/staff can participate for just a $1.
- The Blood Bank of Delmarva is asking for donations of O positive, O negative, A negative and B negative blood to help with shortage in Gulf Area. Visit Delmarva Blood.org to make an appointment.
- AABB: Call 301-907-6977 to donate blood yourself or to coordinate a group to help with blood collection efforts. The most needed type of blood right now is O-positive.
- AmeriCares: Donate online to help get emergency medical supplies where they’re needed, for every $10 given, the group will provide $200 in aid.
- The Salvation Army: Donate online, call 1-800-SAL-ARMY, or text "STORM" to 51555.
- The American Red Cross: Donate online, or text HARVEY to 90999 to donate $10.
- The United Way of Greater Houston: Donate online or text UWFLOOD to 41444 to help with immediate flood relief and home repairs down the line.
- The Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund: Houston’s mayor, Sylvester Turner, started this fund, which supports all victims affected by the flooding. To donate online, click here.
- Houston Food Bank: Their motto is “filling pantries, filling lives” – and for every $1, three meals are provided. Donate Online here.
- The Houston Humane Society: Support the rescue, transport, and care of the animals affected by the disaster by donating here.
- Texas Diaper Bank: It’s heartbreaking to think of the children affected by this hurricane, especially babies still in diapers. Drop off or mail diapers and wipes to 5415 Bandera Road, Suite 504 in San Antonio, Texas 78238.
