Police have confirmed that one of the 13 children held captive in a Southern California home used a deactivated cellphone to call the only telephone number that still worked: 911. According to The New York Times, the 17-year-old girl made the call after escaping from a window of the Turpin's home just before dawn on Sunday.
“I wish I could come to you today with information that would explain why this happened,” Capt. Greg Fellows, a spokesman for the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, said on Tuesday. Police have described the Turpin’s home as filthy, dark and foul-smelling. Parents David and Louise Turpin were arrested on nine counts of torture and child endangerment and remain in jail. It’s still unclear how long, and for what reason, they kept their 13 children locked up.
