In 2016, commuter trains in Japan collided with 613 animals on railroad tracks, causing severe delays and considerable carnage. In order to reduce such incidents, Japanese train researchers have developed technology which will enable trains to snort and bark like dogs in order to scare animals—deer, specifically—off the tracks. An official from Tokyo’s Railway Technical Institute tells The Asahi Shimbun that they hope to have trains outfitted with the technology by March 2019.
