Valentine's Day and Ash Wednesday on Same Day - 1st in 73 Years

For the first time in 73 years, Valentine’s Day and Ash Wednesday fall  on the same day (February 14). This confluence has many devout Catholics  feeling conflicted, as Ash Wednesday is one of two days on the  religion’s calendar where “fasting and abstinence are required,” notes  Bishop Richard Malone of Buffalo, New York. Last year, when St.  Patrick’s Day fell on a Friday in Lent, Cardinal Timothy Dolan issued a  special dispensation permitting Catholics to eat corned beef and cabbage  when consuming meat would otherwise be discouraged. But as The New York Times  notes, Ash Wednesday is a more serious consideration, which has  compelled Catholic leaders to urge followers to celebrate Valentine’s  Day some other time this week.
