Over the past three weeks, WKBN reports that police in Youngstown, Ohio, have been called to no less than 14 disturbances involving menacing raccoons exhibiting "zombie-like behavior." Adding another layer to the weirdness, a majority of these incidents have occurred during the day, even though raccoons are nocturnal. When one sun-drenched raccoon came after Robert Coggeshall's dog, he says the pint-sized predator stood on his hind legs, showed his teeth and then fell over backward "into almost a comatose condition." The Ohio Department of Natural Resources suspects the raccoons are acting up because of a distemper outbreak.
