The world's oldest known gorilla, Fatou, celebrated her 61st birthday at the Berlin Zoo today, munching on a rice cake with the number 61 spelled out in fruit. The AP notes that Fatou shares the distinction of world's oldest gorilla with an ape named Trudy, who lives at the zoo in Little Rock, Arkansas.
Still, it's not completely clear how old Fatou is, as she arrived in Germany by way of France, where a young sailor used her in lieu of currency to pay off a bar tab. If she really is only 61, then she's younger than a flamingo named Ingo, who arrived at the Berlin Zoo in 1948.
