At 3:30 a.m. on Wednesday, a semi overturned and spilled 40,000 pounds of chicken feathers onto Interstate 5 between Tacoma and Seattle (Wash.), backing up traffic for 11 miles as cleanup crews worked into morning rush hour. The Tacoma News-Tribune reports that the driver of the truck, who had an impeccable safety record prior to the crash, fell asleep at the wheel. As for the peculiar load he was hauling, the AP notes that recycled animal byproducts are used to manufacture such items as soap and pet feed.
