You've seen Randy Rainbow whether you know it or not. With 53 million views on YouTube and nearly 100 million on Facebook, you've inevitably seen him on your timeline singing away to cleverly written parodies of showtunes, often spoofing what's going on in the world today, politically or otherwise. His Omarosa! video, sung to the tune of Oklahoma!, racked up tens of millions of views within just a few days and made national headlines for it's thoughtful, creative wit. His videos range from political ones like his parody of the Beauty & The Beast live action film controversy, to videos where he takes an interview with a celebrity or public figure and splices himself into them with hilarious results.
2019 was a big year for Randy Rainbow as he was nominated for his first Emmy award and released his first album, Hey Gurl, It's Christmas. For episode #34 of Pop Culture Weekly, I talked to him about that album, which just debuted at #1 on Billboard Comedy Albums chart. I asked Randy about how this all got started. His quick, cunning wit came out immediately, "Well, it all started with Mel Gibson as most Christmas stories do".
When I asked him what inspired him to do a Christmas record, Rainbow responded: "Well, I'm a gay Jew and that's just the natural progression...I've always been a huge fan of Christmas and Christmas albums and I thought it would be great. I thought it would be a good place to start. If it sucked, it would just be seasonal and we we could just store it under the bed for the year."
