Tony Award winners Kristin Chenoweth and Jane Krakowski talk Apple TV+ musical comedy series Schmigadoon! on Pop Culture Weekly with Kyle McMahon
Whether you're a fan of musicals or you hate them, you'll probably enjoy the new musical comedy series Schmigadoon! The Apple TV+ series stars Keegan-Michael Key and Cecily Strong as two New York City doctors in a long term relationship that attend a rural couples retreat and end up stuck in a town in which everyone is living in a studio musical from the 40's. It sounds and is ridiculous, but it is ridiculous in the most hilarious and fun way possible.
Executive produced by Saturday Night Live icon Lorne Michaels, Schmigadoon! features an all star Broadway cast including Tony and Emmy winner Kristin Chenoweth, Tony winner and four time Emmy nominee Jane Krakowski, Tony winner Alan Cumming, Hamilton's Ariana DeBose, Jane The Virgin's Jamie Camil and the always funny Martin Short. This ensemble cast is a who's who of Broadway, TV and film bringing their incredible artistry to an incredibly inventive series that lovingly satires some of the great American musicals.
Kristin Chenoweth, a Broadway icon who originated the role of Glinda in Wicked, is one of just a handful of Broadway veterans who successfully transitioned to a household name in TV and film. Chenoweth has been nominated for three Tony's, winning one and has been nominated for three Emmys, winning one. Her credits include starring in The West Wing and Glee on TV and in such films as Bewitched, Tinker Bell and The Peanuts Movie.
In "The Musical!" episode of Pop Culture Weekly, Chenoweth, who plays the Precher's Wife Mildred Layton, a stuck in the mud, town miser says, "It is a love letter to music theater...I love that it pays homage to Music Man to Oklahoma to all of our favorites...I think that our writers who also did the music, really nailed it." When asked how she got involved, Chenoweth said, "Barry Sonnenfeld called me....I thought, 'I don't know how I feel about going to another country, I'm nervous.' He said 'You're going to do Tribulation, which is an ode to Trouble from Harold Hill's Music Man. 18 pages and you're going to do it one take.' And I went...(laughs) I'm in!"
Jane Krakowski is another Tony winning actor who started on Broadway and who has gone on to be nominated for four Emmys. She plays Countess Gabriele Von Blerkom in Schmigadoon! Krakowski bulldozes her way into the 5th episode with a series highlight song, hilariously showing off her talent as a singer, a comedian and an actress.
When asked if she enjoys barreling into towards the end of the series with this huge splash and exiting just as quickly, Krakowski said, "When someone like Cinco Paul asks you to be a part of it and then writes you an amazing 11 o'clock number in his series, yes! That character was so delicious and then to get this wonderful little number that takes you by surprise - you don't get to see it coming...For me...that's every bit of the sense of humor with that and the wink, it's all where I live and what I love to do."
Schmigadoon! is a series that is absolutely a love letter to theater, while serving as an onboarding for people who haven't yet been bitten by the Broadway bug. It's premise pokes fun at itself while featuring strong, comedic writing, insanely catchy songs and amazing performances.
