Belinda Carlisle Talks A Capitol Fourth, The Go-Go's & New EP 'Kismet' on Pop Culture Weekly with Kyle McMahon
In the latest episode of Pop Culture Weekly with Kyle McMahon, I sat down with the legendary pop icon, Belinda Carlisle. This special episode takes listeners on a journey through her illustrious career, her new EP Kismet, her upcoming performance on PBS' A Capitol Fourth and the unforgettable journey of the pioneering all-female band The Go-Go's.
Belinda Carlisle, front-woman of The Go-Go's and a solo pop sensation, has been a trailblazer in the music industry since 1978. From playing their own instruments to writing their own songs, to having an all female team behind them, The Go-Go's left an indelible mark on the music charts and music history itself. In this episode, Carlisle delves into the early days of her career, sharing the awe-inspiring journey of The Go-Go's, who took the music world by storm.
Carlisle will be performing three songs on the annual PBS special A Capitol Fourth this Independence Day. She'll performing with the National Symphony Orchestra and while she's performed with a full orchestra before, she tells me it's always a high pressure situation with little room for mistakes. Still, she looks forward to her performance live on PBS from the West Lawn of the Capitol in Washington DC. (Get all of the information on A Capitol Fourth here).
We also delve into Carlisle's successful solo career and her recent induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, an incredible way to cement the legacy of the band. We discuss her collaboration with other iconic women in music like Cyndi Lauper, Dolly Parton, Gloria Estefan (check out my interview with Gloria here), and Debbie Harry on their song "Gonna Be You" from the film '80 for Brady'. The song was written by legendary songwriter Diane Warren (check out my interview with Diane on her incredible career here) who also wrote Carlisle's brand new EP Kismet.
Speaking of Kismet, it is Carlisle’s first English language pop album in 27 years. We go behind the scenes of the new EP, the lead single Big Big Love and working with Diane Warren - who wrote all five songs- once again. She shares how a chance meeting of her son and Warren in a coffee shop led to this creative collaboration and what that means to her.
Additionally, we discuss Carlisle's upcoming tour, Decades, celebrating her monumental career and what fans can expect. The tour is a celebration of all her albums, including material from her solo albums, a few Go-Go songs, and a couple of songs off the Kismet EP.
If you're a fan of Belinda Carlisle, The Go-Go's, or just a music enthusiast, this episode of Pop Culture Weekly is a must-listen. Uncover the magic behind her new EP, Kismet, and get a sneak peek into her upcoming tour. This riveting conversation with one of the most influential women in pop music is sure to leave you inspired.
