Study: Air Pollution Is Making Women Fat

A new study out of the University of Michigan suggests that women exposed to poor air quality see increases in their body size. The exposure to air pollution was tied to higher body fat, fat proportion, and lower lean mass for middle-aged women in the study’s subjects.

The study of 1,654 white, black, Chinese, and Japanese women with a median age of 50 tracked the participants for eight years and showed that those exposed to more pollution saw that their “body fat increased by 4.5%.” Exercise and physical activity acted as a deterrent to the effect.
