Daily Do Good: Nursing Student Saves Stranger’s Life At NYC Airport

A nursing student from Sacred Heart University (SHU) in Connecticut, Natalie Davies, saved a man's life by administering CPR just 12 hours after submitting a paper on the importance of CPR training. She was headed to New Orleans for spring break and waiting for her flight at JFK Airport when she heard a scream and saw a man lying on the ground.

Davies, who has clinical experience and works in an emergency room, rushed to the man’s aid, checked his vitals and — alongside another passenger, who happened to be a cardiologist — began performing CPR. Moments later, a bystander brought them an automated external defibrillator (AED), and after three more rounds of CPR and AED administration, the man's pulse returned. By the time paramedics arrived, the man was awake and talking.

Heather Ferrillo, the undergraduate nursing program chair at SHU, commended Davies for her quick response and embodiment of SHU nursing values. But Davies was just happy to be able to help and credited the man’s survival to the easy accessibility of the AED. Later this year, she’s set to graduate from SHU and she’ll enter her field with some real-world experience in saving lives.
