DDG: Set Of 6 Sisters Overcome Homelessness To Become Nurses Together

For the last decade, the Lawrence sisters of New York have been homeless, but they’ve refused to let that stop them from achieving their dream of becoming nurses. Back in 2013, the family lost their home in Queens and spent the next several years moving between friends’ and relatives’ homes.

Determined to not let their situation keep his daughters from getting a good education, their dad David Lawrence, started homeschooling them. The six eldest Lawrence sisters all earned their GEDs in 2019 and then received bachelor’s degrees from State University of New York earlier this year.

In August, the sisters, now ages 19 to 25, began a master's program in public health at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University, with plans to attend nursing school afterward. Their dad couldn’t be more proud of his daughters’ achievements and is glad to see them succeeding together. He tried to teach them to persevere in the face of challenges, and his lessons seem to have stuck. "Life's not fair,” David says, “And when it throws you a curveball, you gotta adjust to it and keep going."
