When Jamie Rooney’s American Staffordshire terrier, Rocky, disappeared while they were out in the remote Pilbara region of Australia’s Outback, he was afraid he’d never see his pup again. Out of desperation, Rooney reached out to cattle-herding helicopter pilot Jack Poplawski to see if he could hire him to track Rocky down.
Even though it was a “needle in a haystack rescue,” Poplawski, a devoted dog owner himself, was determined to help. He flew low over the vast search area and eventually spotted tracks that seemed too large to be a dingo. Moments later, he found Rocky trotting along a small track.
The reunion was emotional, with Rooney expressing immense gratitude to Poplawski. The experience has prompted Rooney to invest in a GPS collar for Rocky and has given him a newfound appreciation for the cattle-mustering pilots of Australia’s Outback.
