After his liver failed due to damage sustained at birth, Alden, New York, five-year-old Ezra Toczek was diagnosed with end-stage liver disease and put on a transplant list. When his former preschool teacher, Carissa Fisher, learned about his condition a few weeks later, she applied to become a living donor, then last week she was approved to donate a part of her liver to him.
After learning that she’d been approved, Fisher visited the Toczek family’s home in Western New York to share the good news in person, bringing a stuffed animal, balloons, and a handmade sign which reads, “Hey Ezra! Would you like to share my liver?”Ezra's mother, Karen Toczek, expressed overwhelming gratitude for her kindness and sacrifice, describing it as the most amazing gift.
Fisher describes the moment she broke the news to the family as emotional, saying, “It made me very happy to see both of them happy.” The Toczek family hopes for a transplant this summer, while Ezra continues to hang in there, coping with fatigue and other challenges but finding joy in every day.
