Daily Do Good: RI Cops Help Single Mom Furnish Her Apartment

The Providence Police Department in Rhode Island recently stepped in to help Brandilee Cardente, a single mother who’d been living in an unfurnished apartment with her son. She lost both of her parents in 2022 and had been struggling without a support system. Officer Jose Deschamps, who collaborates with the nonprofit Children’s Friend, learned of her situation and decided to organize a furniture drive.

Alongside his fellow officers, Deschamps collected furniture items including beds, dressers, and rugs to fully furnish Cardente's home. The single mom was surprised and grateful for the generosity of the officers, saying, "They gave me a lot more than they told me they were gonna give me. I needed a lot more, but I didn’t want to be greedy.” She thanked the Providence Police Department for their kindness and support during her time of need.

With the holidays approaching, Officer Deschamps shared his appreciation for the opportunity to help, calling it “a privilege.” Providence Police Chief Oscar Perez also contributed, stressing the importance of supporting local families in need. “This is a great city,” Perez says, “But unfortunately there’s challenges.” He adds that the department takes pride in making sure that families in need in their community are taken care of and have the basic necessities.
