A high school in England has seen a dramatic academic improvement that’s being credited to a ban on social media during exam periods. In 2023, Cumberland Community School in East London did an experiment where half of the school’s students deleted all their social media apps and handed in their phones at school to avoid distractions. The results were so impressive that the school decided to expand the program.
This school year, more students took part in the social media ban and the outcome was just as positive as before. Principal Ekhlas Rahman describes the initiative as a “game changer,” saying, “All of a sudden, our students were 100% focused on revising for their exams.” He credits the hard work of both staff and students for the school’s ongoing progress.
Over the last five years, Cumberland Community School has completely turned things around, going from struggling to being one of the U.K.’s top-performing schools. Rahman points out that students from the school now have greater opportunities. After the successes of the last two years, the school is already planning to run the program again in 2025.
