DDG: Truckers Step In To Bring Happiness To Senior Shelter Dog’s Final Days

Honey, a 14-year-old yellow lab in Indianapolis, received a special farewell thanks to a community’s compassion. After her owner, a truck driver, passed away, Honey was taken in by the nonprofit S.O.A.R., which supports people and pets during crises. With her health declining, the group posted on social media asking if any truckers would volunteer to give Honey one last ride in honor of her late owner, and people responded in droves.

The post was shared widely and drew more than 100 comments, offers, and calls. Over the weekend, Honey went on three truck rides, sitting shotgun, resting between seats, and enjoying the view. One of the drivers, Robert Axum, says he signed up because he’s a big animal lover and wanted to bring happiness to the dog’s final days.

Honey also got her favorite treat, Wendy’s chicken nuggets, thanks to the kindness of those involved. Earlier this week, she went for her final ride, one with her owner’s family, who S.O.A.R. was able to connect with through social media. “I know some people think it’s silly to do all this for a pet before they pass,” says S.O.A.R.'s executive director Angela Hopson, “But it has been transformative for her happiness.”
