Daily Do Good: Memphis Airport Helps Kids With Autism Get Travel Experience

On Saturday, Memphis International Airport partnered with Autism Resources of the Mid-South and Delta Airlines to host its first-ever "Flying Together" event. Families with kids who have special needs took part in a mock travel experience, complete with check-in, TSA security, and boarding a plane that stayed at the gate. The goal was to help these families become more comfortable with air travel routines.

President of the Memphis-Shelby County Airport Authority, Terry Blue, says they wanted to give families a rehearsal to show that travel is doable for everyone. Ginger Walton, a parent of a child with autism, explains how important routines are for children on the spectrum and notes how a busy airport can be overwhelming. Autism Resources President Tara Mohundro says that even if participants weren't ready this time, the program would continue annually to help them build their confidence.

The event focused on providing support and encouragement, with organizers saying that all families want to be able to enjoy normal life experiences like traveling. Memphis International Airport officials confirm plans to host the event again in future years. The event was warmly received by families who appreciate the opportunity to practice air travel in a supportive environment.
