Bergy Lopez, who goes by @wavyybergy1 on TikTok, recently shared a video of Tampa ice cream vendor Don Tomas pushing his freezer cart down the road in the scorching heat. The post went viral, racking up more than 4-million views and hundreds of comments from people wanting to support the hard-working man. Commenters shared that Tomas is well-known in the Plant City community for his work ethic and kindness.
Moved by his story, Lopez started a crowdfund to help Tomas buy an actual ice cream truck or trailer. She says the fundraiser is a way to give him better working conditions, allowing him to continue serving the community. Within a week, more than a thousand people contributed.
It’s raised nearly $30-thousand so far, enough to provide Tomas with a more comfortable and practical way to sell his ice cream. The initiative is a testament to the community’s love for him and the power of social media. Thanks to the support, he’ll soon be able to do his work in safer, more practical, and cooler conditions.
