DDG: Pilot Rescues Dog Who Disappeared While Camping In Rural Alaska

On July 4th, during a camping trip near Carmen Lake about 40 miles southeast of Anchorage, Alaska, Koda, a 10-year-old chocolate lab from Soldotna went missing. His owners, Lewis and Amber Ekle, say the dog got spooked, slipped out of his collar, and ran off with his frisbee. For nine days, the couple searched by boat and on foot, while others in the community shared their story and offered to help.

Amber posted about Koda on various social pages, where thousands of people shared the information. Anchorage resident and pilot John Kagerer saw a post on “Alaska Packrafting” and felt compelled to help. He flew to Carmen Lake and shortly after landing, spotted Koda coming out from the woods. Using dog treats, Kagerer lured the pup close enough to put a leash on him and then flew him back to Anchorage.

Koda was reunited with Lewis and Amber, who say the experience felt like a miracle. Though he was scratched, sore, and had lost some weight, he quickly returned to his playful self, cuddling with his family. Lewis and Amber say they’re overwhelmingly grateful for the support and their dog’s safe return.
