On Sunday, Van and Karen Perch of Solon, Ohio, were walking their dog Winston when he came across a discarded fried chicken drumstick and tried to eat it. The drumstick got stuck in Winston’s throat, and despite their attempts to help, he began to lose consciousness. Their neighbor, Kem Cook, a career nurse, noticed the commotion and quickly stepped in to help.
After a failed attempt at the Heimlich maneuver and with Winston nearly unconscious, Cook was finally able to reach into his throat and pull the drumstick out. Noticing he wasn’t breathing and his tongue had turned blue, she immediately began performing CPR using chest compressions.
After a few compressions, Winston gasped and began breathing again. The family rushed him to a veterinary hospital, where he was given a clean bill of health. Cook said she got emotional later when she received a pic of Winston safe and well. Van says they’re deeply grateful and feel lucky to have good neighbors and a strong dog.
