Margaux Cohen was hiking with two friends last month in the mountains near Vancouver, British Columbia, when her pit bull mix, Zion, slipped and began sliding down the mountain. She instinctively grabbed at his harness and was pulled off the ledge, tumbling about 60 feet down the jagged rocks.
Miraculously, they both survived. Cohen says she was conscious the whole time as she hit her face on the rocks during the fall and when she finally landed, she realized her leg was badly broken. As she lay there in pain, she says Zion was sitting beside her, wagging his tail, “Like he just had the time of his life.”
Her friends called for help and a search and rescue team reached them after about two hours. Cohen was airlifted to the hospital in North Vancouver where she’s undergone one surgery and is scheduled for another on her long road to recovery. Fortunately, Zion only suffered minor injuries in the fall, and Cohen is grateful for her friends and the search and rescue team that saved her.
