Baton Rouge, Louisiana, 66-year-old Kent Broussard recently achieved his lifelong dream of joining the Louisiana State University marching band. His love for the Golden Band from Tigerland began when he attended his first LSU football game in 1968 when he was just nine years old. Decades later, after a career as an accountant and raising a family, Broussard decided to return to school at LSU and try out for the band.
Preparing for the challenge, Broussard relearned the tuba after nearly 50 years. He also trained physically by running about 25 miles a week and using a weighted vest so he’d have the stamina needed for marching performances. Last month, he auditioned alongside much younger students and anxiously waited for the results.
When the announcement came, Broussard made the team, becoming the oldest member by 41 years. Last Saturday, he proudly marched onto the football field in LSU’s purple and gold uniform with his family cheering from the stands. “People, they can use this as an example,” Broussard says, “Your only failure is not trying.” He encourages others to follow their dreams no matter their age.
