Last year, 17-year-old Owen Norgrove from Ludlow, England, went in for a haircut, but left with some life-saving advice. His barber, Firat Davutoglu, noticed a lump on his neck during the haircut and advised the teen to see a doctor right away. The lump turned out to be Hodgkin lymphoma.
After the diagnosis, Owen was put on an intensive treatment regimen, including chemotherapy, which lasted more than a year and significantly affected his health. When his hair started to grow back, he and his father returned to get a haircut with Firat, who didn’t recognize the boy. The barber says he got emotional hearing his story and was happy to see him recovering.
Now in remission, Owen says he’s thankful Firat had taken the time to point out the lump. His mother, Hayley, also praised the barber for helping her son get diagnosed sooner, allowing treatment to begin quickly.
