For more than 10 years, a loyal customer visited the Shrimp Basket restaurant in Pensacola, Florida, every morning around 11 a.m. for his daily cup of gumbo. Cook Donnell Stallworth and the staff considered him “everyone’s grandpa” and even celebrated his 78th birthday a few months ago. When the man suddenly stopped coming in earlier this month, Stallworth grew worried and decided to check on him at home.
He visited the man’s house after work and knocked several times before hearing a faint call for help. Inside, he found the elderly customer lying on the floor, injured and unable to move after a fall that had left him stranded for days. Paramedics were called, and the man, who suffered broken ribs and bruises, was taken for treatment and is now recovering.
The longtime customer has since started rehabilitation and Stallworth continues to bring him gumbo while he heals. The cook’s care and quick action likely saved the man’s life and his friends at the Shrimp Basket hope he’ll soon be well enough to return for his daily visits.
