DDG: Teen Cancer Survivor’s Haunted House Helps Kids Battling Cancer

A teenage cancer survivor in Michigan is using his homemade haunted house to raise money for children with cancer. This spooky season, 13-year-oldΒ Jackson AmickΒ of Royal Oak is bringing back his haunted house, which he started back in 2019 with help from his dad,Β Thom Amick. The display, set in their front yard, takes about a month to build and has become both a local attraction and a charity event.

Jackson is a leukemia survivor who was treated at Corewell Health and has been cancer-free since 2022. For the last three years, he’s used his popular haunted house to raise thousands of dollars to purchase special chemo shirts for kids receiving care at Corewell and the Children’s Hospital of Michigan. The shirts unzip for easy access to medical ports, allowing young patients to stay more comfortable during chemotherapy. Jackson says the shirts are more comfortable than having to fully remove clothing during treatment.

This year’s haunted house is larger, includes new features like a custom creature courtesy of Make-A-Wish, and continues to support the same mission. In past years, visitors traveled from across the region to enjoy the haunt and donate to a good cause. The attraction is open through Halloween, with all proceeds going to fund more chemo shirts for kids.
