Daily Do Good: Illinois 8-Year-Old Celebrates Birthday With Food Drive

Instead of having a traditional birthday party, Alex Anning of Tinley Park, Illinois, chose to celebrate his eighth birthday by organizing a food drive. His mother, Kymbria Young, says the idea came to him after he saw a homeless man and got upset when they couldn’t help him and had to drive away.

With the support of Young’s nonprofit, Season to Soar, their home was soon filled with groceries ahead of the event. Alex and his family prepared bags of food, gathering and packing as much food into each bag as possible, and then giving them away to more than 150 neighbors in need. Alex says he wants to give back because it’s good for the community and helps the Earth.

Young says she’s proud of her son for choosing to help others and hopes his actions inspire more people. Alex and his cousins are learning that giving can be more meaningful than receiving and he’s already talking about organizing another food drive for his next birthday.
