Last Thursday, third graders at Thomas Hart Benton Elementary School in Independence, Missouri, alerted authorities to a house fire they spotted outside their classroom window during a reading lesson. One student, Shaelynn, noticed the flames, and another student, Emmett, immediately told their teacher, Addison Hudson, who called 911.
Firefighters from Independence Fire Department Station Four arrived and rescued a dog from inside the home. The dog was initially lethargic but quickly recovered after being given oxygen. The students watched as firefighters worked to get the blaze under control.
Fortunately, no one was home during the fire, and firefighters later visited the school to thank the students. They taught the class about fire safety and encouraged children not to be afraid to approach firefighters during emergencies.
