DDG: Baby Born Weighing 1 Pound Leaves Hospital For First Time

Leah Montayes Macias left Blythedale Children’s Hospital in New York on Thursday to go home for the very first time in her life, just in time for Thanksgiving. Born last May weighing only 1.3-pounds, she’s been under constant medical care for the last 18 months. Her mom, Stephanie Macias, says their family has been holding onto this moment for a very long time and describes Leah as incredibly strong.

Because she was born so early, Leah faced several serious health challenges, including a heart condition, a brain bleed, high blood pressure in the lungs, and chronic breathing issues. Over time, with therapy and care, she’s grown and is now thriving with what Dr. M. Susan LaTuga calls a sparkly personality.

Stephanie and her husband, Andy Montayes, say they’re eager to settle into everyday life with their daughter after what they describe as an 18-month roller coaster ride. Leah will continue to receive oxygen at home and have follow-up appointments, but her medical team says her future looks bright.
