On a recent rainy Wednesday afternoon in southern Texas, 19-year-old Juan Mendoza was driving with his girlfriend when he witnessed a car crash. After the collision, one of the vehicles spun around and came to a stop in the middle of the highway. While other drivers just drove past the scene, the teen stopped and ran toward the damaged car.
Mendoza pushed debris aside and helped pull the driver, 80-year-old Juan O’Matta, and his wife Adriana from their vehicle. O’Matta says that no one else stopped to help, and Adriana describes Mendoza as her “angel.”
The O’Mattas later reunited with the teen at the Texas Roadhouse where he works. At the reunion, Justin Back, president of Acadian Ambulance Service, offered the young hero a scholarship to attend EMT school and a conditional job offer after graduation. Back says the company looks for people who want to help others and describes Mendoza as having courage and a big heart.
