Last Thursday, Joe Sass, a crossing guard at Jamieson Elementary School on Chicago’s North Side, showed up to work to find the street outside the school flooded from a busted water main. Icy water covered the road, creating unsafe conditions for students trying to get to school on a frigid morning. Sass took action to help the students and their families by carrying kids across the flooded street to keep them safe and dry.
He says that helping the children like this might go beyond his official duties but it’s something he’s willing to do. “It’s not in the job description, but I’ll do just about anything for these kids,” the crossing guard shares. He carefully picked up students one by one, carrying them through the icy water.
The act was captured by a news helicopter flying overhead, showing Sass transporting children across the flooded roadway. Parents and students praised him for his kindness, and the internet agreed, thanking him and saying he should be rewarded for doing a great job.
