On Sunday morning, a Stone County, Missouri, man rescued a woman and her dog from icy waters on the James River outside Galena. Kyle Todd says he learned about the emergency through a social media post that his girlfriend shared with him and he decided to go to the river to help. The incident occurred after the dog, Millie, ran onto the ice and fell through.
Todd says Millie’s owner attempted to reach her with a rope tied around her waist but also fell into the frigid water when the ice broke. He helped the woman out of the river and safely back to shore, then used a small kayak to reach Millie, who was struggling in the water.
Just before Millie went under, Todd was able to pull the pup out of the river and return her to her grateful owner. She later reported that Millie had mostly recovered after spending the day warming up under a blanket near a woodstove and that she was feeling unwell but relieved after the rescue.
