Daily Do Good: Snowplow Driver Helps Ambulance Get Sick Baby To Hospital

An Ohio Department of Transportation snowplow driver helped clear roads during Winter Storm Fern so a sick baby could be safely transported to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. Joe Estes received a call about 20 minutes into his shift on Sunday requesting assistance for an ambulance carrying an infant who needed a higher level of medical care. Heavy snow and ice from the storm had made the roads nearly impassable.

Estes cleared miles of snow-covered roadway while the ambulance followed behind him to the hospital. “We’ve got a sick baby and we need to get there, we’re losing our window of time,” Estes recalls being told when he received the call. He describes the effort as “the most important trek” of his career.

Members of the Cincinnati Children’s transport team say they relied on ODOT’s help to make the trip possible and later thanked Estes in person. The team confirms that the baby, Bryson, and his family are safe and doing well. Estes, a parent himself, says helping the family made the experience especially meaningful.
