DDG: Mail Carrier Rushes Into Burning Building To Save 2 Strangers

On Saturday, mail carrier Misty Newman was driving home when she saw a large fireball rise from the Green Acres townhomes complex in Hermantown, Minnesota. She’d just finished delivering mail in the neighborhood, but immediately turned around, drove back in, and ran toward the flames.

Newman entered an apartment building that had just exploded and helped a woman escape before the unit became fully engulfed in fire. After placing the woman safely in her car to keep warm, she returned to the building and rescued a second resident from another apartment. She says the first apartment she entered was completely engulfed in flames by the time she returned outside.

Police later arrived and prevented Newman from re-entering the building, which she says was difficult because she believed others were still inside. During a news conference, Hermantown officials publicly recognized her actions, and Newman later met with the two residents she rescued and their families. Fortunately, thanks to Newman’s brave actions, both residents were unharmed. She says the meetings were emotional and meaningful for everyone involved.
