Daily Do Good: High School Swim Team Pays Off Custodian’s Medical Debt

Students on the J.J. Pearce High School swim team in Richardson, Texas, organized a swim-a-thon to support school custodian Van Le after learning he’d been hospitalized for months and was facing growing medical bills while unable to work. Led by coach Eric Ewing, the team raised funds by swimming laps, with support from across the community. Students say they chose to help Le because of his kindness and the positive way he interacts with students in the hallways.

During a surprise presentation, the team revealed that the fundraiser had raised enough money to cover Le’s medical expenses, with additional help arranged to negotiate hospital bills. The students also presented him with a new bicycle donated by Richardson Bike Mart and a car to help with transportation. The announcement was met with cheers from students and staff gathered for the event.

Le expressed his deep gratitude during the celebration, thanking teachers, professors, and students for their support. He embraced the students as they celebrated together. He says the school means a great deal to him and describes it as his future and his life.
