Earlier this month, 89-year-old Mickey McKinney was attempting to move his snowblower outside his home on Manitoulin Island, Ontario, when he slipped and fell. Unable to get back up and exhausted, he became worried and started yelling for help.
Next door, seven-year-old rescue dog Rosa heard McKinney’s cries for help and started barking at the door, which her owner, Linda Gilchrist, says she doesn’t normally do. “She went to the door and she barked, which was unusual,” Gilchrist recalls. She went outside with her pup, heard McKinney calling for help and was able to respond.
McKinney, who served as a police officer for more than 30 years, says this was the first time he had been on the other side of an emergency and he’s grateful for the dog’s actions. “She’s a lifesaver. I think so, anyway,” he says, adding that he brought Rosa some cookies the next day.
