DDG: California Man Spreads Positivity With Big Signs On Busy Street Corner

For the last six years, John Shaw has become a familiar sight at a busy corner in Monrovia, California, where he stands each weekday morning holding handmade signs with positive messages. He started the effort after the murder of George Floyd, aiming to spread kindness and connection in his community. He’s created nearly 100 signs, including messages like “Love your neighbor” and “broken crayons still color,” and stands at the intersection for about an hour each morning.

The signs have drawn attention from passing drivers and neighbors, who respond with honks, waves, and gestures of support. Residents say they appreciate the uplifting messages and the sense of connection they bring to the community. Shaw has also used his signs to acknowledge local events, including honoring a well-known bear who was recently put down after being deemed a public safety threat by state authorities.

He says the messages are often ones he feels he needs to hear himself, and he focuses on encouraging positivity and mental well-being. He measures his success not through social media likes, but through real-world reactions like honks and smiles. Some people have even stopped to share personal stories, including one woman who was deeply touched and became emotional after seeing one of Shaw’s messages.
