A passenger on an out-of-control county metro bus in Seattle stepped in to stop the bus after the driver suffered a medical emergency behind the wheel. As the bus crashed into several cars in the Greenwood neighborhood, Ernie Makinson moved to the front and attempted to revive the driver before pulling the air brake to bring the vehicle to a stop.
He sustained injuries to his shoulder and head, but says he acted because the other passengers, including women and children, were at risk, and he wanted to keep them safe. After the bus stopped, the driver regained consciousness and was later reported to be in stable condition. King County Metro officials say they’re investigating the incident and have expressed gratitude for Makinson’s actions.
He says that during the chaos following the incident, money he had saved for rent was stolen from his backpack. Fortunately, the Salvation Army has given him a place to stay and a police officer at the scene helped him set up a Cash App account to receive donations. Transit officials are currently working with Makinson on claims related to the incident and his recovery.
