A New Mexico family’s 12-year-old dog is recovering after confronting a bear that wandered onto the family’s rural property. Despite being half-blind, the pup, Honey, had been tracking something unusual overnight, and by morning, the Martinez family found her badly injured in the driveway with signs of a struggle around the land.
The family rushed Honey to an emergency veterinarian, where she was treated for severe injuries, including a deep neck wound, and they later received continued care from Española Humane to help manage costs. Family members describe the extent of her injuries, noting swelling and significant wounds, and say they were devastated to see her in that condition.
Honey still faces a long recovery, with her wounds expected to take months to heal, but her actions protected the family and their animals, including chickens and horses. Denise Martinez says Honey is their “little savior” and as she continues to heal at home, they’ve started calling her “the bear slayer.”
